Rusted Bathtub Repair & Refinishing
Rust on a bathtub is never on the surface — it’s the iron or steel underneath showing through where the enamel has worn away or chipped. No cleaner removes it, and it only spreads. The fix is to grind the rust out, fill the damage and give the whole tub a new surface — which is exactly what refinishing does.

Why bathtubs rust — and where
Around the drain
The most common spot. The enamel wears thin from decades of standing water and cleaning; once bare metal shows, rust creeps outward in a ring.
Chips and scratches
A dropped shower head or a dragged bucket chips the enamel. The chip itself is small; the rust that grows under it is not.
Hard water and old finish
LA’s hard water leaves mineral deposits that trap moisture against worn enamel. On a previously refinished tub, rust often appears under a peeling coat.
Rust repair is part of refinishing — not a separate patch
We don’t patch rust spots. A patch is a different color, a different texture, and it fails at the edges within months. We treat the rust and then refinish the entire tub, so the repaired area disappears into one continuous white surface.
- Grinding out the rust. The rusted area is sanded down to clean metal; loose, bubbled enamel around it is removed so nothing is left to lift the new finish.
- Etching and cleaning. The whole tub is acid-etched, neutralized with a soda-based cleaner, rinsed and dried with heat — bare metal included.
- Filling. Pits and chips are filled and leveled so the surface is smooth before coating.
- Pour-on enamel. The tub is coated edge to edge. The thick, self-leveling enamel seals the repaired metal completely — no moisture gets back in, so the rust doesn’t return.

When a rusted tub can and can’t be saved
Can be refinished
Surface rust, rust rings around the drain, rusted chips and scratches, rust stains spread across the bottom — on a cast-iron or steel tub, all of this is routine. Even tubs that look far gone come back white.
We’ll tell you if not
If rust has eaten through the metal, or the tub has had an acrylic liner (water trapped underneath rusts the tub from the inside), we’ll say so when we see the photos. We don’t take jobs we can’t warranty.
One photo of the rusted area close up and one of the whole tub is all we need. Most rust repairs are included in the standard refinishing price — no surcharge for the usual ring around the drain.
