Clawfoot Tub Refinishing in Los Angeles
A clawfoot tub is the one piece in the bathroom nobody wants to replace — and in Los Angeles, with its stock of 1910s–40s houses, there are thousands of them still in daily use. When the inside has gone dull, stained or chipped, we refinish it in place and give it back its original glossy white.

The inside of the tub — where it matters
We refinish the interior of clawfoot tubs: the basin, the walls and the rolled rim — the surfaces that get used, stained and chipped. The result is a seamless, high-gloss white that looks like the original porcelain did a century ago.
The exterior — the painted outside of the tub and the feet — is a different job: it’s decorative paint, not enamel, and it’s handled by a painter, not a refinisher. If the outside needs a refresh, do it before we come; the interior finish goes on last.
- Basin, walls and rim refinished as one continuous surface.
- Chips and rust spots on the interior filled and covered.
- Around the faucet and drain — fixtures masked, drain area coated.
- Freestanding — no wall seam to seal; the tub is protected from the floor up.
A new clawfoot tub costs more than refinishing — by a lot
An original clawfoot is heavy, thick-walled cast iron with a rolled rim that modern reproductions rarely match. The porcelain wears out; the tub doesn’t. Refinishing keeps the piece and replaces only the part that failed.

How we refinish a clawfoot tub
- Sanding. The old interior finish, stains, lime scale and surface rust are ground down; chips and pits are opened for filling.
- Acid etching and neutralizing. Etched, rinsed, scrubbed with a soda-based cleaner, rinsed again — the step that makes the enamel bond.
- Drying and masking. Dried with heat, wiped with alcohol; the exterior, feet, faucet and drain are masked so nothing gets on them.
- Pouring. Pour-on enamel is poured around the rolled rim and flows down into the basin, self-leveling into one glossy layer. The rolled rim comes out especially well — no edges, no brush marks.
- Curing. 24 hours, then the tub is back in use.
Clawfoot tubs vary — a photo of the inside and one from the side is enough for an exact quote. Text or email it with your ZIP and we’ll reply the same day.
